Gaelic Day at New Lanark World Heritage Site

Join us for a relaxed, family-friendly Gaelic celebration delivered with Historic Environment Scotland’s Gaelic Language Team.

Whether your family is fluent, learning, or completely new to Gaelic, there are activities for all levels. This bilingual event is all about enjoying Gaelic together in a unique World Heritage setting.

Please note: This is a closed event for families connected to the Gaelic-medium stream at Thornliebank Primary School. Free advance booking is required.

Date & Time
Saturday 21st March - 11:00–16:00
Arrive from 11:00 and build your own day.
You’re welcome to stay as long as you like.

Arrival & Check-In (Important)
All guests must report to the Visitor Centre reception on arrival and sign in and confirm:
Number of adults
Number of children
Which timed sessions you plan to attend
Collect and wear your wristbands throughout your visit
Sign out when you leave

This helps us manage capacity and keep everyone safe.

Drop-In Activities (All Day) - No booking or Gaelic required
Location: River Room.
Self-guided tour: Explore the mills with Hamish the Highlander
Craft space: Create your own Gaelic-inspired artwork
Costume corner: Dress up as historic millworkers

Gaelic Site Tour & Annie Macleod Experience (Full Site) - Booking required
11:30–12:30 or 13:30–14:30
Capacity: 20 per session
Suitable for intermediate/fluent Gaelic speakers

Sensory Storytime & Craft Session (River Room) - Booking required
11:30–12:30 or 13:30–14:30
Capacity: 12 children per session
Beginner-friendly and ideal for younger children

Booking Information
Free ticketed event
Children must remain with parents/carers at all times
Wristbands must be worn throughout the day

Food & Drink
Activities run all day, so you can explore and take breaks whenever suits your family.

On site you’ll find:
A café serving food for all ages
The Mill One Restaurant at the New Lanark Hotel
A picnic area and park if you’d prefer to bring your own food

Parking
Visitor car park: £3 for all day parking
A complimentary shuttle bus runs between the carpark and the visitor centre throughout the day for those with mobility concerns.
Blue Badge holders can park in marked bays directly in front of the Visitor Centre
